Yemoja, the Yoruba Orisha of the ocean, is revered as the mother of all beings. She embodies the vast, life-giving power of water, with dominion over the tides and the ceaseless movement of the sea. My art practice explores the sculptural possibilities of traditional bead-stitching. Recently, I have been experimenting with a technique called the warped square stitch. In this piece, interwoven square modules combine in shifting patterns, forming a rippling surface that echoes the fluid, dynamic movements of water, an homage to Yemoja’s realm.

 

This work also reflects my current interest in West African spirituality/philosophy where the rhythms of spirit and beadwork are deeply intertwined.
