White II
glass beaded icosahedron lamp on wooden base
8.5 x 10 x 8.5"
2017
This lighted sculpture was developed from a series of studies I did on the Platonic solids. These well-known geometrical solids have long been celebrated for their harmony, symmetry and intrinsic beauty. I was particularly interested in a more tactile experience of polyhedra.
This shape was constructed as an icosahedron with 20 triangles that curve dramatically inward due to the combination of beads. The seams of the triangles disappear into 30 rhombi, evoking the rhombic triacontahedron. The pentagonal lines of the design highlight the fact that the icosahedron and dodecahedron are dual polyhedra.
